Features

How Hookr works for players — accounts, profiles and photos, location by area, the Discover deck, matches and chat, notifications, and safety and police evidence.

Accounts

Hookr uses the phone's accounts. The first time it opens on a phone with a SIM, the phone logs in to that SIM's account (made then, with a name like user482913), and the player makes a profile for it. Under Profile → Account a player can:

  • change the username and set a password;
  • log out, log in to another account, or make a new one;
  • take an account to another phone by logging in there with its password.

A phone that logged out (or has no SIM) shows the log-in screen. Once an account has a password, a phone with that SIM needs it too.

Profile

  • Name, age (18 or over, checked on the server), and up to 6 photos chosen from the phone's Photos or taken with its Camera. The phone asks for permission the first time. Drag photos to reorder them; the first is the main photo.
  • A bio, up to 5 interests and up to 3 prompts with answers.
  • "I am" (man, woman, non-binary) and "Show me" (men, women, everyone).
  • An age range and a maximum distance.
  • "Use my location": the phone asks for Location; distances are then worked out by area, never the exact spot, and the area is refreshed at most every five minutes, also when the option is turned off and on again. Without it, no distance is shown and the player is never filtered out by distance. The answer can be changed in the phone's Settings, under Hookr.
  • "Pause my profile": hidden from Discover and no swiping; matches and chats stay.
  • A preview shows the profile the way others see it.

Discover

  • Cards come from the server: profiles that fit both players' preferences, minus anyone already swiped, blocked, banned or paused. Offline players are included.
  • People who liked you come first (Super Likes at the very top), then the recently active, the nearby and those with shared interests.
  • Drag a card right to like, left to pass, up to Super Like, or use the buttons. Stamps show which way it is going.
  • Tap the left or right of a photo to move through photos. The bars at the top show where you are.
  • Tap the arrow (or the bottom of the card) for the full profile, with like, pass, Super Like, share, block and report. Sharing sends a hookr://profile/... link; in Messages it opens that profile in Hookr for anyone the preferences allow.
  • Rewind takes back the last swipe, unless it made a match.
  • Likes, Super Likes and rewinds have daily limits.

Matches and chat

  • A like that meets a like is a match. The player who made it sees the match screen with both photos and can send a first message straight away; the other gets a notification.
  • New matches sit in a row at the top; conversations are listed below, newest first, with unread dots.
  • Chats hold text and photos, show "Read" under your last message once they read it, and update live.
  • Hold your own message to unsend it.
  • Unmatch, block and report from the shield button in a chat or from a profile. Reporting also blocks.

Notifications

New matches and messages arrive as phone notifications; tapping one opens the chat. A chat's notifications replace each other instead of piling up, and clear when the chat is opened. A Super Like that is not yet a match also sends a notification, which opens Discover and clears once the player looks at their deck. What a locked phone shows follows the phone's Show Previews setting.

Safety

Every request is checked and paced on the server. Ages, likes and matches are never taken from the phone. Photos only come from the phone's own media, checked with the phone; a web address is refused. Unsent messages and ended matches stay on record for staff.

Hookr leaves evidence on the phone the way the phone's own apps do: profile changes, swipes, matches, messages (and unsends), unmatches, blocks and reports. Police see it in a phone extraction (Forensics), deleted items included for the server's recovery window. A phone police hold opens Hookr read-only: it can be looked through, but nothing can be posted, swiped, sent or changed from it.
